You have to experience the Swiss train system at least once. So many options. So on time. Don't dawdle! The train doors will crunch crunch your tardy luggage. We ran like we were back in Penn Station the day before Thanksgiving to catch a slow, steep train at Göschenen to Andermatt.
Well now. The Alps are very in your face spectacular. Maybe that has something to do with the lack of trees. We enjoyed touring the ski area with Robert from Eco Tours our first day there. Spring skiing conditions.
I was feeling a little jet-laggy and under the weather so in the afternoon I took the train from the eastern end of the ski area back to Andermatt: one hour of epic views.
The next day we hit Gemstock, the highest point at Andermatt, for fresh snow. The vista from the tram! But we had to skedaddle back from skiing to make the train to Disentis for our reservation at Stiva Grischuna, the only non super expensive restaurant listed in the Michelin guide for the area. There were several other American families in the tiny, family-run restaurant. Quelle surprise. In fact, there were lots of Americans at Andermatt. I always forget how not far Europe is from the East Coast.
The portrait of Jesus behind Jane reminds me of that botched fresco restoration in Spain. Anyway, Disentis is in the Romansch-speaking area of Switzerland. There is a quiet, striking monastery in town.
I call this whipped cream baroque. There's more! Off to Ticino.
