Wenatchee

Mission Ridge, the ski area local to Wenatchee, gave away ice cream sandwiches this weekend in honor of National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. This was helpful because Horace requires serious bribing to get on the slopes. Jane is more into it. But they both handled the dreadful, low-snow conditions with equanimity. At least it's not cold outside.

Our most memorable meals have generally been preceded by a distracting level of hunger, which doesn't arise much these days. After Mission Ridge and the hotel pool however we were primed to annihilate some platos combinados. We ended up at Fonda Oaxaqueña in East Wenatchee, a heavily Hispanic town. Why only one Yelp review, mi amigo? My fried jalapeno covered in lime and chile was like raw fugu--pristine and dangerous. That's amole.

The Columbia River runs so swiftly I don't understand how anyone does anything recreational in it without burning fossil fuels.

At least this caboose isn't red.
